I did listen to some of When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris on my road trip last weekend, but I accidentally packed my iPod on the trip back, so we didn't get to finish it. I'll resume it next. I just requested The Invention of Hugo Cabret at the library, so I'll read it if I finish East of Eden. What are you reading this week?

Sunday Salon: Recent Acquisitions and a Completed Challenge

I'm a couple of weeks late posting this wrap-up, but the Middle East Reading Challenge hosted at Helen's Book Blog ended July 31. The challenge was to read one book set in the Middle East. I read three. I hoped to do better, but I'm still happy that I read that many. They were: Shadow of the Swords by Kamran Pasha Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi Last weekend I went on a little binge at Barnes & Noble. I had a pretty hefty gift card in hand and I just finally had to spend it. I got Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese   Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford I was looking primarily for these two, so imagine my excitement when they were both on the "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" table! Score! After much deliberation, I chose South of Broad by Pat Conroy as my free book. I also got Heartless by Gail Carriger because I own the other three in the series. While I was there, this caught my eye: How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster I'm a little worried about it, but the "lively and entertaining" part gives me hope. I'm doing much better with non-fiction, but mostly I read narrative non-fiction, not "how-to's." We'll see. So, what do you think? Have you read any of these? I have an affiliate relationship with Malaprop's, my local independent bookstore located in downtown Asheville, NC; and Better World Books. It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday!  What Are You Reading? is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. Over the past week I've Posted:A review of Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English by Natasha Solomons Pictures of my birthday loot A Character Connection featuring Calpurnia Tate A review of Deception Point by Dan Brown Read:Fool Moon by Jim Butcher Currently Reading:Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson, read by Peter Altschuler The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain Up Next:I still need to read The Invisible Ring by Anne Bishop before I return it to the library, and I still need to read more banned books. Right now I'm thinking about Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. We'll see though. I said pretty much the same thing last week! As I write this on Saturday afternoon, I'm planning on making a stop by the library in a few minutes, so these plans are definitely subject to change. ETA: I came out of the library with an armful of graphic novels. That's about all my attention span can handle at the moment, so it's a good bet some of those will be coming up soon.
