Which Authors Are You Thankful For? Booking Through Thursday

Booking Through Thursday "What books and authors are you particularly thankful for this year?" The Book Thief by Markus Zusak--I don't have the words to say how much I love this book. The characters, the story of The Word Shaker, Jesse Owens and Rudy Steiner, Papa's shining spirit...I could go on and on. This immediately rocketed to the top of my favorites list and I can't imagine anything replacing it. Yes, it's that powerful. Read it. Fair and Tender Ladies by Lee Smith--My love for this is best described in a quote from another book I love, A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly.      "Why don't they tell the truth? Why don't they tell how a pigpen looks after the sow's eaten her children? Or how it is for a girl when her baby won't come out? Or that cancer has a smell to it? All those books...I bet not one of them will tell you what cancer smells like...      I don't mean to be coarse. I just...I don't know why I should care what happens to people in a drawing room in London or Paris or anywhere else when no one in those places cares what happens to people in Eagle Bay."      "Make them care, Mattie, and don't you ever be sorry." That's what Lee Smith has done for my part of the world with Fair and Tender Ladies. To Kill a Mockingbird--Has there ever been such a powerful book that was told in such an innocent, engaging voice? Harper Lee holds a mirror up to our society, and we should be ashamed of what we see. At the same time we see hope for ourselves in Scout's innocence. Another book that should be (and frequently is) required reading. Peace Like a River--This is a well-written adventure story that has…

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!  Thanksgiving has never been one of my favorite holidays.  I'm a picky eater.  I usually end up with macaroni, a roll, sausage balls and pineapple casserole on my plate--until dessert.  Then I load up!  But it is good to set aside at least one day to really focus on your blessings, and let me tell you--I AM BLESSED.  I have a husband whom I adore and who adores me in return.  I have a family that is willing to support me in all my projects (I'm looking at that follower list that's only got family listed as I write this on Sunday afternoon).  My family is so great that I would love them and be friends with them even if they weren't family.  I have friends who put up with the fact that I never call.  (I really need to work on that)  I have a job that might drive me crazy sometimes, but it pays the bills, it's probably not going anywhere, and I have enough downtime to get in some serious reading.  I have a house that I love with a beautiful view.  I might be a picky eater, but I always have more than enough to eat.  I've even found an online community of book lovers that I enjoy interacting with.  Life is good.

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson: Book Review

4 Stars. I enjoyed this one so much more than the first one that I was left wondering if I just read that one at the wrong time or if Larsson really improved that much between one book and the next. Whatever it was, this was way, way better than I expected, and I'm glad it was chosen as one of my groups' monthly reads. In all [...]

Welcome

Welcome!  My first post and I have no idea what to write.  I feel like an idiot talking to myself, but I guess I should just pretend that I have an audience eager to read every word I type. ;-) I started this blog because the few book blogs that I follow just look like so much fun!  I enjoy writing my reviews on GoodReads, I like talking about books, and I really want to participate more fully in memes and contests. I found The Story Siren's blog advice to be infinitely helpful. The Cutest Blog on the Block had a lot of useful tips also. Thanks for stopping by!
