Scout Finch: Character Connection

We all have characters we love. Let's spotlight these fantastic creations! Whether you want to be friends with them or you have a full-blown crush on them, you know you love them and want everyone else to love them too! Most of you will probably post about how much you love each character, but this is a great place for the more creative ones among you to let go and have fun! Write a love letter to Captain Wentworth. Write yourself into a scene with Anne and Diana. Draw a picture of yourself in Jamie's arms. The possibilities are endless. Be sure to post the book's title and author, and be very careful not to give away spoilers while talking about how much you love your characters. Mr. Linky will be posted here on The Introverted Reader every Thursday. I bet most of you know Scout Finch from Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. I love her, so you're going to hear all about her today. Scout is a good girl at heart but she has trouble with her temper and has a hard time understanding the concept of tact. Her chosen method of resolving conflicts is with her fists, and she doesn't see a problem with telling a poor little boy that he's poor. But she adores her daddy, Atticus. I do too! Atticus is a widowed dad who has his hands full with Scout. She loves him so much that usually he just has to sit her down and talk to her like a real human being (*Gasp* She's only a child!) in order to get her to change her ways. At least for a little bit. ;-) She is hilarious and smart, and she hates school because her teachers keep trying to drag her down. They even…

Rodrigo Belmonte: Character Connection:

Mr. Linky will be posted here on The Introverted Reader every Thursday. It's back to The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay this week. My post last Thursday was about Ammar ibn-Kharain. This week, I'm going to tell you about my other book love, Captain Rodrigo Belmonte. Young men entering the army of Valleda will do anything to enter the service of Rodrigo Belmonte. Bribery in every conceivable form is sent Rodrigo's way, but he only chooses those he thinks will add something to his world-famous band of soldiers. He's a natural-born leader and his men would happily die for him. He remembers to thank them for their services, he takes care of them, he looks out for them, but he doesn't hesitate to hand out discipline when it's needed. He's also just a fundamentally good man. This book is a fantasy, but it's essentially a story of Moorish Spain. He has to operate under the nobility's rules, but he doesn't have to respect them or like them. He bends them as…

Ammar ibn Kharain: Character Connection

Mr. Linky will be posted here on The Introverted Reader every Thursday. You're going to get one of my book-loves today.  That's right--not crush, or lust, but love.  Don't worry; my husband knows. I have been in love with Ammar ibn Kharain from The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay, a historical fantasy, since the first time I read it, probably about 15 years ago. He's one of those characters that you aren't too sure about at first, because he's first introduced in the Prologue as he murders someone. It's been too long since I've done a re-read for me to say how long it takes to fall in love with him, but I don't think it takes terribly long. He's just the perfect sort of Renaissance man. He writes poetry, he fights, he's a politician, he's a diplomat, the list goes on and on. And he's damn sexy too. ;-) A quick glance through found these initial descriptions of him. They fall a little short, but I don't have time for…

Jilly Coppercorn: Character Connection

We all have characters we love. Let's spotlight these fantastic creations! Whether you want to be friends with them or you have a full-blown crush on them, you know you love them and want everyone else to love them too! Mr. Linky will be posted here on The Introverted Reader every Thursday. Thanks for stopping by my very first Character Connection post!  I hope you'll decide to join in! My very first character spotlight is not going to be a book crush.  I'm as surprised as you are! I'd like to introduce you to Jilly Coppercorn.  She's a minor character in most of Charles de Lint's Newford books and stories, but she's the main character in The Onion Girl; Widdershins; and the novella, Promises to Keep. Jilly has never met a fairy tale she doesn't believe in.  For that matter, and perhaps harder to believe, she's never met a person she doesn't believe in.  It would be easy to write her off as a "cock-eyed optimist" without any sort of firm grounding in reality, but Jilly comes from a reality so dark, most of us wouldn't even want to contemplate it.  But she's mostly healed, thanks to friends who found her, rescued her, and believed in her, and now she tries to pay…

I’m Starting a Character Meme!

I've been thinking about this since I posted my book crushes on Valentine's Day. Several of you seemed to like the idea and have plenty of book crushes of your own, so I thought I would start a monthly meme where we could write about the characters we feel strongly about. There are so many great female characters out there though, that I don't want to limit this to just book crushes; I want us to be able to talk about all the great characters we relate to, anyone from the girl we wish we could be friends with to the hot guy we wish we could climb into bed with. Or vice versa if that's what works for you. So here are the rules as I'll post them monthly. Who do ya love? Or love to hate? You know you've got a lot to say about some larger-than-life characters, and this is the place to say it. Write a straightforward post. Draw a picture. Vlog, write poetry, write fiction, cast the role, be as creative as you want! Be sure to post the book's title and author, and be very careful not to give away spoilers while talking about how much you love your characters. Mr. Linky will be posted here on The Introverted Reader on the first Thursday of every month. I've asked Parajunkee to make a button for me, and we all know the great work she does. My first post will be up with Mr. Linky this Thursday, March 25. I think we can have a lot of fun with this! What do you guys think? Will you be joining in? If you like the idea, help me spread the word please!

Book Crushes on Valentine’s Day

I thought about trying to write about my favorite couples for Valentine's Day, but honestly, I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the actual romantic part of books. I pay more attention to how I feel about a male character than how the women in the book react to him! So that's what you're getting today. Some of my book crushes. Admit it--you have them too. The first one is a little weird. Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird. Okay, he's a father figure. But a widowed man raising his children well, with the moral strength to seriously defend a black man in the Jim Crow South? I'm in love. Papa and Rudy from The Book Thief for pretty much the same reasons I love Atticus. Here's a spoilery quote that shows why I love Papa. And Rudy--a boy who impersonates his hero, Jesse Owens, in Nazi Germany is going to grow up to be a man that I love. Odd Thomas from the book of the same name. He's funny, self-deprecating, heart-broken, loyal, and always doing his best. He might not be a hottie, but he's got a beautiful heart. The rest are more frivolous. The Phouka from Emma Bull's War for the Oaks. Wow. Playful, protective, fey, and sexy? Sign me up. Willy from the same book is a ball of sex appeal himself. Jamie from Outlander--There's a drummer for a Scottish group that I describe as sex on legs. That's Jamie too. Finally, there are Rodrigo Belmonte and Ammar ibn-Khairan from The Lions of al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. I have told my husband, quite seriously, that if Rodrigo and Ammar ever walk out of the pages of that book, he should be very worried. They're strong, intelligent, attractive, faithful, thinking-soldier types who treat…
