Immigrant Stories Challenge

Colleen at Books in the City is hosting an Immigrant Stories Challenge from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011. I'm signing up for the Just Off the Boat level--read 1 to 3 books about an immigrant experience. These books can be fiction or non-fiction, and they can be immigrant stories set in any country. I wasn't sure what I would read, but in looking through Colleen's recommendations, there are several that are already on my to-read list that I'm very excited about. Go to Books in the City to sign up! I'll track my progress here.  Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English by Natasha Solomons Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson, read by Peter Altschuler The Arrival by Shaun Tan Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford I have an affiliate relationship with Malaprop's, my local independent bookstore located in downtown Asheville, NC; and Better World Books. I will receive a small commission at no cost to you if you purchase books through links on my site.

Okra Picks Reading Challenge

Kathy at Bermudaonion is hosting the Okra Picks Challenge. The challenge is to read books that have been chosen by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance to be handsold. This will overlap nicely with my own Southern Literature Challenge. I'll aim for 1-3 of these books. Visit Bermudaonion to see the list of books and sign up for yourself. This challenge started a few months ago, but it doesn't end until March 31, 2010, so there's still plenty of time.  I'll track my progress here. Zora and Me by Victoria Bond and T. R. Simon Southern Plate by Christy Jordan I have an affiliate relationship with IndieBound, Book Depository, and Better World Books and will receive a small commission at no cost to you if you purchase books through links on my site.

Year in Review

2009 was a great reading year for me! I finished 134 books! That has to be a record for me, at least since I finished school! I was pretty stingy with the five-star ratings this year, so I think I'll go ahead and list them all. I think it's funny that I don't read that many young adult books, and yet my five-star list is tilted firmly that way. Maybe that should tell me to pick up more young adult fiction? Anyway, in no particular order, my top books of 2009 (links are to my GoodReads reviews): Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones One Child by Torey Hayden The Mystery of Grace by Charles de Lint A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier Graceling by Kristin Cashore A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly Maus I: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman Maus II: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins War for the Oaks by Emma Bull Fair and Tender Ladies by Lee Smith Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder Un Lun Dun by China Miéville Have you read any of these?  What did you think? What are your top picks for 2009?
