Weekly Update at Introverted Reader

Welcome to my weekly update for September 15, 2024!

After two busy weekends back-to-back, we spent last weekend mostly relaxing at home. We did go to Indian Ladder Farms on Sunday, where we bought two different kinds of apples that we’d never heard of before (Sansas and Zestars), had pizza from our favorite local pizza joint at their food truck, and scarfed down some fantastic apple cider doughnuts.

My husband was off work on Wednesday so we decided to take a scenic drive through the Catskills. Dirty Dancing was set in the Catskills (though it was largely filmed around western North Carolina, where I’m from). Add in the Mrs. Maisel episodes set in the Catskills and I was ready to explore. But everything was closed! Apparently a Wednesday after Labor Day is not the time to visit this region. The signs at most places said they were only open on the weekend. We did take a couple of short hikes. We also visited the town of Woodstock, NY, which was open for business. I bought The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery at The Golden Notebook bookstore. If you’re curious, the actual Woodstock Music Festival took place in Bethel, NY, about 50 miles away.

  • A stairwell surrounded by books. The stair risers are painted with white bunnes and the words "Hop on up to the Little Golden Notebook."

  1. I love bookstores with stairs that have words printed on the risers. We’ve only been to two bookstores on our current trip, and the one in West Yellowstone didn’t have anything that caught my eye. I bought The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka at Paulina Springs Bookstore in Sisters, OR, though. Looking forward to read it!

  2. Finding a copy of The Soul of an Octopus is a find! That book just gobsmacked me. Between it and watching My Octopus teacher, we no longer eat octopus around here.

  3. The Catskills looks like a lovely place todo some hiking. I look forward to hearing what you think about The Soul of an Octopus.

  4. Love that bookstore staircase! I’ve listened to Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth on audio. Should look for Nona the Ninth for October listening!
A local author is visiting our library in a couple of weeks, Marcy McCreary. Her dad worked on a Catskills resort, so she grew up on one, with her sister. Her mystery series is set at a Catskills resort, starting with The Disappearance of Trudy Solomon.

  5. Nooooooooooo I hate when things are closed! But at least the scenery is ALWAYS open. That overlook is beautiful and I love that library!!!

  6. I hate it when you try to dodge the crowds by going mid-week only to find things closed.

I remember reading Slaughterhouse Five as an assignment in high school. I may need to look at it again.

  7. Finding shops and attractions closed is always a bummer! Sorry your trip was disappointing. I read “The Soul of an Octopus” recently, and I reread Kurt Vonnegut from time to time, so I think you have some good reading ahead.

  8. Glad you were able to get out, but I’m sure you were disappointed that things were closed up. I’ve never been to the Catskills (or much of the east coast, sadly) but I would like to do so.

I’m still thinking about The Feather Thief.
