Weekly Update at Introverted Reader

Welcome to my weekly update for July 31, 2022!

My sister is here visiting this week so I’ll keep my post brief.

As my husband and I drove home to Billings from Rapid City, SD last Saturday, we stopped by Devils Tower National Monument. It was really something to see! Apparently the name “Devil’s Tower” is a mistranslation and local tribes, who view the area as sacred, have asked Congress to officially change the name to Bear Lodge, which is what they’ve always called it. That proposal is now a bit of a political football. *sigh* Why can’t we just get along? Anyway, here’s my picture of it. We saw maybe eight rock climbers in various stages of ascent as we circled the tower. They’re braver than I’ll ever be!

  1. Bear Lodge is a much cuter name and I love the story of the legend behind it. I vote to change the name to Bear Lodge. According to that article you linked us to, it started OUT as Bear Lodge but then some idiot who needed to clean the wax out of his ears mis-translated Bear Lodge into Bad Gods so they went with that.

Anyway, that is a stunning photo of Bear Lodge!

  2. Bear Lodge sounds like a better name to me, anyway. I have never been fond of the idea of naming anything after devils or demons or the like. Still—whatever its name, it looks like an amazing place! And there’s no way I would be climbing it, either.

  3. I’m glad to you got visit Devil’s Tower, it is a very special place. I was able to visit over 20 years ago, and felt a calmness come over me while there. Enjoy your time with your visitors.

  4. Oh I hope they will honour the request to change the name.
The End of Everything is looks so cool, I think I put it on my list after seeing a previous blog post you had it in! Or I may have seen it elsewhere. Hope you enjoy it!
    Have a great week ahead!

  5. Enjoy all your company! Looks like great scenery no matter what the name is. In my area, some things are being renamed to the local Native American’s preferences. This is something of an issue because they aren’t using the same alphabet which makes it hard to read, not to mention pronounce, the new names. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  6. How fun to have your sister visiting. We are back on the road, heading down to Santa Rosa for a couple of weeks. Nice to get back in the RV! I’ve always wanted to see Devil’s Tower. I hope they can get the name corrected… You got a great photo.

I haven’t been reading much, as our visitors have recently headed back home and I was busy getting everything ready for our trip. I’m loving my audiobook (The Four Winds), but my print book (No Mark Upon Her) isn’t calling to me. It will be a slow month for books since we’ll be on the road until the 18th. Home for two weeks then off to Montana on the 6th of September! I’m super excited about that trip since we’ve never been to Montana.

  7. I’ve been to Devil’s Tower once. It’s quite impressive. I’m sad Congress makes an issue out of everything. The local tribes were there long before we were. The name should be changed, just like with Denali (Mt. McKinley). I hope you enjoy your time with your sister. Have a great week! 😀

  8. The mountain is very cool, But you’d never catch me climbing it. I hope they change the name. If the current name is a mistranslation and local tribes say it’s sacred then Congress should change it. Seems that everything today is a major issue. Just change the name!

  9. We went when my daughter was about 9 and it was fun. They had a junior ranger program which she and her friend who was with us for a fall break trip, enjoyed. It’s nice that you and family & friends who visit you get to visit many interesting places.

  10. I remember loving the movie A River Runs Through It, but I didn’t get to the book. I’ll bet its very good. Have a great week!

  11. Those rock climbers are definitely braver than I would be as well! But what a lovely photo.

Enjoy your visit with your sister and your friend and I hope you will have time for some reading this week.

  12. Ugh… I didn’t realize there was a controversy over Devil’s Tower’s name now. Why can’t we just get along, indeed!! The place is an amazing sight regardless, but you’ll never catch me trying to climb anything. Enjoy the time with your sister!

  13. I cannot imagine rock climbing on that mountain! Wow.

I wonder what you think about A River Runs Through It. Living in Montana as you are right now—it seems like the perfect time to read it.

I hope you have a great time with your sister and your friend. It feels so good to finally get to spend time with others.

  14. It doesn’t seem like it would be too much a hardship to change the name! Sigh. This world sometimes. That is one of my husband’s top ten destinations to see one day! Glad you had a good week.

  15. Have a wonderful visit with your sister! That’s just exhausting about changing the mountain name. Changing it just doesn’t seem like that hard of a request. That said it is gorgeous and those mountain climbers are waaay braver than me! Have a great week!

  16. Wow- does everything have to be an issue? Seems like if the local tribes want the change that’d be the thing to do. But yeah-everything becomes an issue now. Anyway- enjoy your visitng! And have an awesome week!
