Welcome to my weekly update for January 19, 2025!
My husband worked last weekend so we didn’t do any touristy stuff. I’ve gone back in time to October to share some pictures I took while I was on a blogging break.
We flew to São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, for a week in early October for our 20th wedding anniversary. If you aren’t familiar with them, they’re a collection of nine volcanic islands that are part of Portugal but they’re kind of in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was moody but the islands are temperate and they are absolutely gorgeous. São Miguel is known for beautiful flowers, especially hydrangeas, that bloom pretty much everywhere. I love hydrangeas but thought we would miss them and most other flowers by visiting in October. I was wrong! There were so many flowers blooming!
It wasn’t the most relaxing vacation since Hurricane Helene had just destroyed a lot of western North Carolina, where my home and heart are. Luckily, I was able to talk to my mom on the phone just before they lost electricity, landline, and cell phone service on the Friday of the storm so I knew they (my parents, two uncles, an aunt, my grandmother, and spouses) were all okay. But I had other concerns about drinking water and their access to the outside world. Luckily, my dad was able to do some off-roading and get out to a cell phone signal to let my sister and me know that they were all still good just as I was about to board the plane for the Azores on Sunday. That relieved a lot of anxiety but I have to admit that when we were in our hotel, I was obsessively checking my phone for updates and sharing any reliable information I could find on Facebook.
Anyway, here are some of our pictures from São Miguel! They really don’t do it justice.

- Santa Idria viewpoint overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. I believe those pink flowers are amaryllis lilies. We hired a local photographer to take some 20th anniversary portraits for us at this overlook and they are magical.
- Lagoa das Sete Cidades–This lake is inside an old volcanic crater. When the weather is truly sunny, one half of the lake is bright blue and the other half is bright green. There’s a better viewpoint but fog completely obscured it when we went there. This was the best view we could get but it still took our breaths away.
- Ground level at Lagoa das Sete Cidades.
- This little chapel was in the small town of Sete Cidades.
- Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park. I think this is a man-made waterfall but it’s so gorgeous!
- We enjoyed walking around the coastal streets in the small town of Vila Franca do Campo. This beautiful spot really caught our eye. In the distance is Ilheu de Vila Franca do Campo, an island formed from another dormant volcanic crater. One wall has collapsed a bit so there’s a lagoon inside where people like to go snorkeling.
- Nossa Senhora da Paz. We probably could have spent a day just taking pictures from this chapel. It overlooked Vila Franca do Campo. We weren’t able to go inside but we definitely climbed those stairs to take in the view.

You make me want to go to the Azores! Gorgeous photos! I’m sure it was stressful knowing what was going on in NC, but I’m glad you were able to talk to your mom before they lost power.
I’ve had The Devil’s Highway on my TBR list for quite some time. Hope you enjoy it.
Beautiful pictures, but I can imagine it was stressful not knowing what was going on at home.

Pleased to Meet Me sounds like a fascinating read. I’m also interested in reading What You Are Looking for is in the Library.
Mother Nature is such a nasty beast at times. Glad your family remained well throughout Helene. Went over and read your Reading by the Numbers post. Love how you broke it down. This week’s photos are breathtaking. Hope you enjoy your reading week.

I’m glad your family was okay! Your vacation photos are beautiful. Now I have a new place that I want to go. 🙂
What a stunning location! Thanks for sharing your photos.
I’m interested to learn what you think about Please To Meet Me.
Wishing you a great reading week
I think I need to add What You’re Looking For Is in the Library to my TBR. Beautiful pictures, and I can only imagine how breathtaking those views would be in real life. We’re freezing down in Nashville, TN tonight, and worried about how snow in Boston might affect our flight home in the morning. Travel is great, but also can be stressful and make you feel cut off at times!
Hope you enjoyed your vacation in spite of the hurricane worries. A lovely place to visit – those islands
Beautiful photos 😍 I’ve seen What you are looking for … A few time lately, I’ll have to check it out. Happy reading this week.
Oh my gosh what a beautiful place! How amazing to travel there!
Those pictures are stunning!!!! And I’m so glad your family was ok during Hurricane Helene! That must’ve been terrifying!
Beautiful photos. I love hearing about your travels.

I really liked What You Are Looking for is in the Library, too. Your photos of the Azores are beautiful!
I just added Pleased to Meet Me and The Devil’s Highway to my wishlist. They both look good.
Wow. Those islands are gorgeous. Happy (belated) anniversary, Jen!
I got a copy of Run yesterday after reading your review and am half way through it already.
I had no idea the Azores are so beautiful; what a wonderful vacation even though you were stressed about family.
I thought The Devil’s Highway was super interesting!
I loved What You Are Looking for. Such a good book. I wonder what felted item I would get?
I am glad to hear that your family was safe during the hurricane! I can see how that would make your trip less relaxing, worrying about everyone back home.
I also have What you are looking for is in the library. I plan on reading it in February if the mood strikes right. Happy reading!
I have What You Are Looking for is in the Library but haven’t read it yet. What a beautiful view! I hope you enjoy your books and have a great week!
