Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl invited us to share ten travel books this week. I’ve written about Books That Awaken My Travel Bug in the past so I’m posting a topic I missed instead–ten debut novels I enjoyed. I’ve tried to mostly choose books that are older or a little off the radar. I rated all of these five stars. Links go to my review if I’ve written one or to Bookshop.
- Graceling (Graceling Realm #1) by Kristin Cashore (Review)
- The Goose Girl (The Books of Bayern #1) by Shannon Hale (Review)
- Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters #1) by Juliet Marillier
- City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy #1) by S. A. Chakraborty
- The Golem and the Jinni (The Golem and the Jinni #1) by Helene Wecker (Review)
- Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1) by Gail Carriger (Review)
- The Eyre Affair by (Thursday Next #1) Jasper Fforde
- The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (Review)
- The Secret History of the Pink Carnation (Pink Carnation #1) by Lauren Willig
- She-Rain by Michael Cogdill (Review)
That’s my list! Have you read any of these? Which books did/would you choose? Link up every Tuesday at That Artsy Reader Girl!

I enjoyed THE GOOSE GIRL, THE EYRE AFFAIR, and THE THIRTEENTH TALE, although it’s been ages since I’ve read them. Nice list!
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

Thanks for stopping by!
My daughter loves Shannon Hale but I have not read her. Enjoy the rest of your week!
I’ve lost track of Shannon Hale because she’s prolific but my favorite of her books that I’ve read is actually Book of a Thousand Days. The Goose Girl is probably a close second though.
I want to get back to that Gail Carriger series! (Or one of the spin-offs…) I remember liking this book as well, but I haven’t read anything more in that world.
I love all of the Parasol books! I think Soulless is my very favorite but they’re all good. Well, I am missing a couple of the novella spinoffs but I think I’m close enough to speak confidently about all of them 🙂
Sometimes it’s hard to get all of the novella spinoffs for series like that. I know that sometimes they get published in anthologies or whatever that are harder to find.
Carriger’s are available as standalones at the library, it’s just a matter of too many books, too little time. I’ll get to them one day!
Oh, that’s nice though! Not all spinoff novellas are easily available like that.
I adored the Eyre Affair. I’ve never seen it on the TTT posts before! Have you read the rest of the series?
I thought I had read all of them but I just checked and I’ve only read the first five. I’ll have to finish up the last three. The first one was my favorite, if I recall correctly. The world Fforde created in this series was so fun!
Pink Carnation is so fun! My TTT
Right? I’m not usually a huge fan of romances but I loved that series!
her voice is so witty!
That’s exactly what I loved!
I have not read any of these. Here is my post https://paigesofnovels.com/2024/08/13/top-ten-tuesday-books-series-or-authors-that-lived-up-to-the-hype/
Thanks for stopping by!
I hadn’t realized The Thirteenth Tale was a debut. Quite a good debut in fact. Happy reading! My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/best-reads-of-2024-so-far/
I was surprised when I realized it was a debut too!
I have Daughter of the Forest, but I haven’t read it yet. These all look really good.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
I love most of Marillier’s books. I hope you like Daughter of the Forest when you get around to it.
I’ve only read City of Brass and enjoyed it as well!

That was such a great series!
Golem and Jinn sounds like an interesting title — a mix of mythologies? I know the Golem is a Jewish thing and jinn are creatures from ME lore…
You’re exactly right–the author did mix two mythologies and set them in historical New York. It’s such a good book.
The Goose Girl looks interesting.
It’s the first in a loose series but The Goose Girl is my favorite. So good if you like fairy tale retellings!
I love so many of these, but I’m happiest to see Chakraborty on your list!
I love the Daevabad series!
I’ve read two—Eyre Affair and Thirteenth Tale—but I’d like to read lots more—Graceling, Goose Girl, and Soulless, among them.
