Welcome to my weekly update for August 22, 2011! It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

Posted:

Review of Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess’ Stardust

Review of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson, read by Peter Altschuler

Character Connection featuring Temeraire

Review of The Woods by Harlan Coben

Read:

The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by Lauren Willig–Love this series!

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, read by Jayne Entwistle–Loved Flavia de Luce!

Blankets by Craig Thompson–Beautiful graphic novel/memoir

Currently Reading:

Passing by Samaria by Sharon Ewell Foster

When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris, read by the author

The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain–I’m so turned off by the way he seems to think everyone who isn’t an American is a dirty, lazy, greedy bastard that I’m struggling to read this. When he’s not going on about that, he’s funny and he has some great observations. We’ll see. It’s not going on the DNF list yet, but it’s getting close. Has anyone else read this? Am I missing something?

Up Next:

If I get to anything new this week, it will be The Odyssey, adapted into graphic novel form by Gareth Hinds.

What are you reading this week?

  1. Oh! I really hope you get to The Odyssey. It's not a very tough read in that format and you already know I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I'm so happy to hear you loved The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, I really need to pick that one up soon.

Have a fabulous reading week and thank you so much for stopping by earlier! :o)

  2. yes I am currently reading Innnocents Abroad. I share your reaction. I'm half way, and his sarcasm and getting too much for me. Not tender towards the Italians, though I do understand after my 1st time in Florence/Firenze some decades ago. and his dislike of religion does not help. But yes there are some funny gems, and also some nice descriptions of landscapes. I hate giving up on a book, so I'm sticking to it – a few pages of this ebook everyday. I have always had a love/hate relationship with Twain, and this book does not help.
I read years ago Engulfed in Flames and loved it. I enjoy all of Sedaris except his very last book, which I did not find funny AT ALL.
here is my review of that book:

  3. What a great selection of reading! The best book I read last week was Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder. Please come see what I finished and what's up next.

  4. I have been meaning to read the Alan Bradley series. My library has the second and third book, but they never seem to have the first!

  5. So many good books listed here!! I have wanted to read the Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, and now I am going to add The Betrayal of the Blood Lily to the list too. Have a great week!

  6. I have The Woods in my tbr pile. I will be reading it at some point over the next few months as part of the "Books I should have read by now" challenge. Have mixed feelings on it as I met the author and he was horrible to the staff in the book store.

I plan on reading The Odyssey soon too. I have the Oxford edition but think the graphic novel would be interesting. need to look out for that.

  7. I might put the Neil Gaiman book in my TBR pile then 🙂

Here's my "It's Monday! What are you reading?" post.

  8. Have a great reading week.

I have a couple of chick-lit beach reads on the go at the moment.

  9. I've got Major Pettigrew's last Stand on audiobook, your review makes me want to push it up the priority list. I enjoyed The Woods but I'm a fan of Harlan Coben's writing.
Have a great week and happy reading 🙂

  10. Major Pettigrew's Last Stand isn't something I would normally gravitate to . . . but I think your review convinced me 🙂 Sounds great!

  11. You had a fantastic week and it looks as though this week will be just as wonderful. Happy reading.

  12. I liked Stardust and really really want to read Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I'll have to read your review of it. I think Lauren Willig's books are a lot of fun too.

    Have a great week!
