During my first book blogging stint, I hosted a few reading challenges, as much for my own benefit as for anyone else’s. One of the challenges I’ve decided to resurrect is the Books in Translation Reading Challenge 2021. It’s pretty self-explanatory, right? Nevertheless, here are the rules.
Table of Contents
Rules
- You can read a book that’s been translated from any language into the language of your choosing. The challenge is not limited to translations to or from English.
- You can read any genre
- You can read books meant for any age group
- Crossovers with other challenges are fine
- Any format that you choose is also acceptable
- The challenge will run from January 1 through December 31, 2021
- A blog is not required for participation; you can also link to reviews on other sites such as GoodReads or LibraryThing
- Sign up anytime throughout the year
- I’ve tried to keep this simple but if you have any questions, reach out in the comments, via social media (links in my sidebar), or my contact form.
- Most importantly, have fun!
Reading Suggestions
Looking for suggestions? I have a shelf on GoodReads you can check out. There’s also a Listopia list on GoodReads. Linked reviews for the 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, and 2012 challenges are a great resource too.
Levels
Beginner: Read 1-3 books in translation
Conversationalist: 4-6 books
Bilingual: 7-9 books
Linguist: 10+ books

Is anyone reading these comments? How come no else has posted their recap post?
I’m reading them but life is busy right now. I don’t know why no one else has posted a recap.
I also just posted my recap: 52 titles, not bad, though only 39% of all the books I have read this year (though you could add to that 32 books read in French).
In 2020, the translations were 50% of all my reads
Impressive! Congratulations!
Managed to add it again with another entry, though now I made a typo!! It’s Rider, not Ride…
I have finally taken time to add some reviews I had forgotten to add along the year.
Not sure what’s happening for #46. It shows blank space when I refresh, though when I try to re-enter it, it says it’s already there.
I’ll try one for time. If it doesn’t work, here is the link. I really want you to have it, as it’s a fabulous book:
Rider on the Rain, by Sébastien Japrisot: https://wordsandpeace.com/2021/10/05/book-review-rider-on-the-rain/
That’s odd, it was blank for me too. I corrected it before I saw the next comment that you managed to add it again. I deleted the duplicate. I apologize for the confusion!
Hi, are you doing this again next year?
Just signed up! Can’t wait to start!
I’ve been looking for a challenge like this for a long time. Thanks for hosting this!
Thanks for signing up!
I’m planning to try it out! I’ll go for Linguist level, because I read at least 15 books in translation in 2020 without any particular intention behind it. So might as well go for at least 10 in 2021!
Thanks for joining in! Good luck!
I am going to sign up this year. It’s a perfect crossover with the European Reading Challenge I host on Rose City Reader. I haven’t had much time to do other challenges lately, but I’m going to try a few in 2021. I’m looking forward to this one. When I get my post up, I’ll come back with a link.
Thanks for signing up!
Thanks so much for doing this again. I actually challenge myself to read 20
I’ll definitely do this, just working out my other challenges then I’ll sign up!
I’m in the same boat–trying to finalize and getting a signup post written!
This sounds like fun! I think I’m going to sign up at the Conversationalist level also.
Have you added this on The StoryGraph? I’m tracking my 2021 reading challenges over there, so if you haven’t added it there (and don’t plan to) I will set it up and link it back here to help spread the word.
I have a StoryGraph account but haven’t done anything other than import my GoodReads books. I’ll take a look. Thanks for the suggestion!
I really like the way they do their reading challenges. It’s easier to track where you are with it than some other sites I’ve seen.
I just added all 3 of my challenges at StoryGraph.
Awesome, cool! Thanks for doing that.
