Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Home Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland by Dave Barry: Book Review--4 Stars. Read the full post on my blog at the link in my bio.My husband is a travel nurse who largely grew up in Miami and in winter months we often find ourselves back in Florida as he works at different hospitals around the state. Even before we started traveling, we visited my in-laws, who live in Naples now, at least once a year. Needless to say, Iโ€™ve spent a lot of time in the state. And I still ask my husband what the heck is going on in Florida! I read a theory somewhere that itโ€™s because of โ€œsunshine lawsโ€ that make details of arrests public that are kept hidden in other states. But whatever the cause, donโ€™t we all settle in for a good read when we see any headline that includes the words โ€œFlorida Manโ€?I laughed so hard as I read this! I practically read the first half out loud to my husband before I finally just told him he needs to read it himself. Itโ€™s short so thereโ€™s no reason not to. Dave Barry has some interesting theories about what makes Florida the way that it is and they are all hilarious. The introduction is the best part as he details his theories and shares some true only-in-Florida stories. After that he travels around different parts of the state and reports on what he finds. Weโ€™ve visited several of the same places so that added to my enjoyment. If you need a quick, entertaining read, probably made funnier if you have any connection at all to Florida, pick this up.
The Secret, Book & Scone Society (#1) by Ellery Ad The Secret, Book & Scone Society (#1) by Ellery Adams, read by Cris Dukehart: Book Review--4 Stars. full post on my blog at the link in my bio.Iโ€™m classifying this as a cozy mystery simply because the murder and investigation fit that genre. But itโ€™s way darker than I expected. The four main characters have some very troubling secrets in their pasts. It was nice to watch them share their stories and start to heal together though.I didnโ€™t realize that this is set in North Carolina, my state, until after I started reading it. Thatโ€™s always a nice bonus. I wish Noraโ€™s bookstore was real so I could visit because it sounds magical (though Malaprops Bookstore in Asheville, near the fictional location of this book, is a wonderful place I can actually visit). I could also tear up some of Hesterโ€™s deliciously described pastries. I had a bit of fun pondering what special flavors she would choose if she were baking a personalized comfort scone for me. Something with blackberries, I believe. And speaking of nice bonuses, I really loved that the potential love interest is a hot paramedic. I married a hot paramedic and they tend to be overlooked in the world of first responders. It was nice to see one get some favorable attention, even if it is in fiction.I largely liked Cris Dukehartโ€™s narration but she does give the one local woman in the society a very heavy Blanche Devereaux-style drawl. Weโ€™re twangy in the southern Appalachians, not drawly. Itโ€™s a noticeable difference to anyone who has any experience with both accents and it grated on my ears a bit. This is a solid start to a cozy mystery series with surprisingly complicated main characters.
