A Bit of Me(me) Button

Danielle from There’s a Book hosts A Bit of Me(me) every Saturday. Each week she asks us to post the answer to a question designed to help us get to know each other better.

This week’s question:

What is your favorite smell and why? Does it bring back memories?

I’ll admit that I thought this question was a little weird at first. I don’t have the greatest sniffer out there, so smells aren’t something I pay a whole lot of attention to. Working in health care, this can honestly be a blessing. Is that TMI? Anyway, I thought about it and realized there are a lot of smells that I really like, but there’s one that stands out.

I ♥ the smell of freshly-cut grass. I smell it and I’m happy.

I grew up pretty far out in the country. My grandparents have a small family farm and I grew up just a “little piece” down the mountain from them. My uncles have slowly been taking over more and more of the responsibility for things over the years. Anyway, my parents’ house is at the edge of all this, in between a big hayfield and the tree line. So every summer, in about June, my uncle would mow the hay for the first time. Oh, it’s a heavenly smell. We were fresh out of school for the summer, I had stacks and stacks of books from the library to read, life was simple and life was good. We didn’t have air conditioning back then, so we would open the windows in the evening to let the cool air in and that smell would come wafting into the house on a summer breeze. The lightning bugs would start coming out and shining their little lights in the trees and in the field.

Yup, freshly-cut grass brings back tons of great memories.

No, neither of these pictures actually has anything to do with me, they just captured the spirit of what I’m writing about!

  1. Ooh, yes! As a kid, I always loved when we would hang laundry out to dry (even though we had a dryer), because then it smelled delicious.
I also love the smell of fabric softener and people doing laundry, so maybe it's a laundry thing.

  2. Ooh, I love grass smells too! If only I wasn't allergic (not too badly, but still annoying enough), I'd like it more.

  3. Good choice! I love the smell of freshly cut grass too.

The smell of the beach/ocean is my favorite!

  4. Oh, I love freshly cut grass, too. I lived in the country as a kid, as well, and know what you're talking about.

However, I wrote about something else here:

  5. Ha! Fresh cut grass was one of the two smells that I added to me A Bit of Me(Me) post.

  6. I LOVE the smell of fresh cut grass! At one point I even bought candles with the smell, because I just couldn't get enough of it.

Sorry for the odd question! :o) But see, it did bring back some great memories. I kind of thought it was a little weird at first to be honest, but there are so many amazing memories associated with smells. Thanks for sharing yours!
